gallery one paintings
It was at an arts residency in rural Portugal in 2012 that I began to paint again. If I were to talk about what inspires me or provides me with the conditions to want to paint, it is the natural landscape – its elements of space, light, sky, distance, breadth and beauty. And although many of the paintings allude to landscape, I don’t set out to paint the landscape. There are no direct references to the observed world. Rather, I’m drawing from a ‘pot’ of sensory memorabilia that is then rendered intuitively with paint. The painting for me, in both process and as finished product, becomes a meandering visual story, a four-sided open story that can wander off the canvas.
